One of
the most alarming trends we see is the
growing number of women and children on
the streets as well as the swelling ranks
of the working poor. Each year, as the
number grows, the need for more facilities
equipped to provide assistance becomes
more critical.
The Union Gospel Mission has responded
to this need by opening a women’s
clothes closet. This remodeled building
is equipped with dozens of neatly displayed
racks of clothes, shoes, toiletries, purses,
socks, and nylons, a well as a state of
the art hair salon. Backpacks, school
supplies, children’s clothes and
toys are provided for women with children
in school. Dressing rooms allow women
to try on clothes, make sure that they
fit, and actually see themselves before
they take things home. The clothes closet
is staffed entirely by women volunteers
who act as assistants for each visitor.
As shopping concludes, a lunch is provided
for every person, and volunteers have
the opportunity to visit and build relationships
with one another. Here, women from all
social/economic backgrounds can come together
and bear one another's burdens, share hopes
and dreams, or perhaps just make a friend.
It’s not only the homeless women
of Sacramento that come to the mission
for aid, but also the working poor. Sadly
many single women and mothers simply can’t
make ends meet, and the opportunity to
have quality clothes at no cost is a tremendous
lift to their spirits.
The women’s shelter is staffed
entirely by volunteers, and a Bible study
is available for all women to attend.
Counselors are available to listen and
assist with needs of various kinds. Qualified
professionals volunteer their time to
cut and style hair, and help to give each
woman a sense of dignity and self worth.
Each week a day is set aside for volunteers
to come together and sort and size new
clothes. These caring individuals make
sure that the clothes closet resembles
a department store, and take special care
in helping each woman with the proper
selection of clothes and accessories.

This wonderful ministry to the
poor and indigent women of our community
relies on the generosity of people
like you. Shoes in good condition,
women and children’s clothing
of all sizes, toiletries, toys,
children’s books and school
supplies are a pressing need. Volunteers
who are skilled beauticians and
counselors are especially welcome.
