How to get a Meal
Weeknights: Chapel at 7:30 PM with dinner at 8:30 PM.

Must attend chapel to have a meal.

Nightly Meals

Every night of the year, Union Gospel Mission provides free, hot meals to men, women, and children in need – no matter the season or circumstance. These meals offer more than nourishment; they provide a place of welcome, safety, and dignity for those who may otherwise go without.

Local churches partner with us each month to prepare and serve meals, building meaningful connections with our guests. Through chapel services, volunteers share the hope of the gospel, offering prayer, encouragement, and the love of Christ alongside each meal. We meet both physical and spiritual needs, reminding every person who walks through our doors that they are seen, valued, and not alone.

How to get a Bed (Men Only)

Must have a Photo ID and TB Card.
Signups start at 5:30 PM daily.
Must claim bed between 6:30 PM – 6:45 PM
Beds can be claimed for up to 7 days
Must attend the 7:30 PM Chapel Service.

Getting A Bed (Men Only)

If you are a man in need of a safe place to stay, we welcome you to our Men’s Shelter.

Sign-Ups:

Nightly at 5:30 PM, on a first-come, first-served basis.
Newcomers are given first priority.
- Newcomer: Someone who has never stayed overnight or has not stayed overnight for at least one year.
Newcomers and returning guests may be assigned a work duty as needed. Missing assigned work duties may result in loss of your bed.

Wake-Up Times:

Monday – Friday: 6:00 AM
Saturday, Sunday & Holidays: 7:00 AM
If an earlier wake-up is required, inform the Contact Office at check-in.

Showers:

All overnight guests are required to take a shower.
Men without beds are welcome to shower in the evening.

Shelter Rules

No food or drinks upstairs.
Radios, cell phones, and personal items are not allowed upstairs (medications only).
Electronic devices may not be recharged inside the building; use the charging station on the back patio.
Do not loiter at the top of the stairs.
Laundry may not be washed in bathroom sinks.
Towels are not allowed upstairs.
All bags must be checked into the secured storage unit and labeled with your assigned number.
Beds must be made each morning; beds left unmade may be confiscated.
Stay next to your assigned bed until the breakfast bell.
Pajamas must be turned in each morning.

General Rules

Front gate opens at 5:30 PM.
Chapel doors open at 6:30 PM.
No entry is allowed after the front gate closes at 7:30 PM.
Alcohol, drugs, profanity, smoking, and weapons are prohibited on Mission property.
No running, pushing, loitering in the Chapel lobby, or camping on Mission property.
No parking on Mission property during the day.
Food served in the Mission dining hall may not be taken outside the building.
Bags must be checked into the secured storage unit. The Mission is not responsible for lost or stolen items; unclaimed items are recycled.

Chapel Services

Nightly at 7:30 PM, Sunday at 11:00 AM.
Once preaching begins, leaving and re-entry is not allowed.
Do not interrupt the speaker.
Hats, headbands, or beanies are not allowed for men during services.
No eating, drinking, cell phone use, texting, or reading books, magazines, or newspapers during services.

Men's Clothing and Showers

During these hours, you’re welcome to come in off the streets to take a shower and receive clean clothes at no cost. This is a place to rest, refresh, and take care of yourself.

Our Men’s Clothing Closet is stocked through donations and includes pants, shirts, undergarments, jackets, hats, beanies, socks, belts, and gloves. We also provide essential hygiene items such as towels, shampoo, soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant, and razors – everything you need to clean up and feel ready for the day.

When you receive new clothing, we ask that you turn in used items. We wash them, and if they’re still in good condition, they’re placed back in the clothing closet so others can be helped too.

How to Receive a Food Box

Pickup Times:
Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM

Sign-Up Required:
Please call (916) 447-3268 by 11:30 AM on the day of (or during the week of) your desired pickup to reserve your food box.

Guidelines:

Households may receive one food box every 30 days.
If you miss your scheduled pickup without notice, you will forfeit eligibility for 30 days.
Please bring a valid photo ID and proof of your current address (such as a utility bill).
Note: A photo ID alone does not count as proof of residence.

Holiday Food Box Program:
Pickup dates and requirements may differ during the holiday season. Please call for updated details.

Food Box Program

The Mission provides nourishing meals to men, women, and children experiencing homelessness, but our outreach extends far beyond our campus. We actively serve the broader community by supplying food boxes to families who are struggling to feed their children and to seniors facing food insecurity. How to Apply for the Men’s New Life Program:

Interviews are Monday – Thursday, 9 – 11 AM and 1 – 2 PM

Must have a negative TB test within 1-2 days of the interview. If accepted, the applicant must join the program immediately.

The Men’s New Life Program is now accepting new candidates. If you’re seeking lasting change, here’s what you need to know before applying:

Program Requirements:

A current TB clearance is required.
Interviews are conducted in person only, Monday–Thursday from 9:00–11:00 AM and 1:00–2:00 PM.
If you are accepted, you must be able to enter the program immediately.

Please note that interviews do not guarantee acceptance into the program.

Our remodeled building has dozens of neatly displayed racks of fashionable clothing, shoes, purses, socks, undergarments, accessories, and toiletries. Children’s clothing and shoes are also provided for women with children ranging from infant to school age. Dressing rooms allow women to try on clothes, ensuring they fit and see themselves before taking things home. We are now offering showers to women every Tuesday and Thursday! We aim to give each woman a shopping experience and restore dignity in a loving, Christ-centered atmosphere.

Mailroom Services

Homeless men and women can receive their mail (no packages) at the Mission.

Please Note:
To use our mailroom services, you must have a photo ID and complete a request form. This helps prevent fraud and ensures your mail is secure. Mail cannot be accepted if you are not on file—it will be returned to the sender.

Mail is typically processed with a one-day delay.
There is no Saturday delivery, and Friday’s mail is handed out late; Monday’s delivery covers three days and will be available Tuesday morning.

Mailroom Rules

No packages accepted. We only accept First Class letters and large envelopes. (VA medication is allowed.)
Do not use this address to conduct business (DBA). Mail received for business purposes will result in termination of mail privileges and be returned to sender.
Check your mail regularly. Mail must be picked up within 14 days, or it will be returned to sender. Failure to check mail for 30 days will result in loss of mailroom privileges.
No sexually explicit mail is allowed. Magazines or materials of this nature will result in loss of service.
You must come in person to check your mail and show a valid photo ID.
No cursing, threats, or inappropriate gestures toward mailroom staff. Violations will result in loss of mailroom services, no exceptions.
You must sign up for mail services before using them, or mail will be returned to the sender.

Rental Hours:
Monday–Thursday: 9:00–11:00 AM and 1:00–2:45 PM
Friday: 9:00–11:00 AM
Saturday and Sunday: Closed

Fees:
$4.00 per week or $16.00 per month

Locker Rentals

We offer lockers for rent to give you a safe place to store your personal belongings. Having a locker means you don’t have to carry everything with you, and it helps protect important items like your ID, medications, clothing, and personal keepsakes from being lost or stolen.

Using a locker can make daily life a little easier whether you’re attending appointments, looking for work, or accessing services. It also helps create a sense of stability and routine during a challenging season.

Lockers are available on a first-come, first-served basis. If you’re interested, please speak with the mailroom attendant for more information.

Haircuts for the Homeless

Looking for a fresh haircut? Thanks to our faithful volunteers, Keith and Gretchen, you can get one right here at the Mission.

For men: Keith, our skilled barber, works with all hair types to wash, cut, and style your hair.
For women: Gretchen, an experienced hair stylist, generously volunteers her talent and skill to wash, cut, and style hair for ladies visiting the Women’s Clothes Closet – working with all hair types.

A haircut is more than just looking good – it’s a chance to feel refreshed, confident, and ready to face the day. Come by and let us help you look and feel your best!

Winter Warming Center is Open November - February

Currently closed — will reopen in November 2026

Our Winter Warming Center provides a safe, warm place for men, women, and children during the cold months. When open, it’s located in the Dining Room at Union Gospel Mission, where you can escape the rain and cold, receive a warm blanket, and enjoy light snacks and hot drinks.

A security guard monitors the gate and opens it every 15 minutes for entry and exit, keeping everyone safe.

We also invite you to join Chapel Service at 7:30 PM, followed by a hot, nourishing dinner at 8:30 PM.
