The Women’s Clothes Closet was renovated in 2006 to meet the needs of homeless women and children. One of the most alarming trends we see is a growing number of women and children on the streets as well as the swelling ranks of the working poor. Sadly, many single women and mothers simply can’t make ends meet. Each year, as the number grows, the need for more facilities equipped to provide assistance becomes more critical and The Union Gospel Mission has responded to the need. Here, twice a week, women and children can come and receive clothing, shoes and much needed supplies, all free of charge. In addition, a Bible study is provided, along with a light snack and beverages.

Our remodeled building is equipped with dozens of neatly displayed racks of fashionable clothing, shoes, purses, socks and undergarments, as well as accessories and toiletries. Children’s clothing and shoes are also provided for women with children ranging from infant to school age. Dressing rooms allow women to try on clothes, making sure they fit, and actually see themselves before they take things home. Our goal is to give each women that comes in a shopping experience and restore dignity in a loving, Christ centered atmosphere.

The Women’s Closet is staffed by caring volunteers who act as assistants to each guest. Bible study leaders and volunteers are available to listen and encourage. As shopping concludes, volunteers have the opportunity to visit and build relationships with one another. Here, women from all social/economic backgrounds can come together and bear one another’s burdens, share hopes and dreams or perhaps make a new friend.

Each week, Monday and Wednesday are set aside for volunteers to come together to sort and size clothing, shoes and accessories. These caring individuals make sure that the closet resembles a department store, and help to keep it tidy, organized and presentable for shopping.

This wonderful ministry to the poor and indigent women of our community relies on the generosity of people like you. Women and children’s clothing in all sizes and in good condition are needed as well as socks, undergarments and toiletries which are always a pressing need.
