A Place of Help and Hope

One of the most alarming trends we see is the growing number of women, children, and working poor who are struggling to make ends meet. As these needs continue to increase, Union Gospel Mission responds with compassion and care, meeting both physical and spiritual needs in the name of Jesus.

Twice each week, women and children are welcomed to receive showers, free clothing, shoes, and essential supplies in a safe and caring environment. During each Clothes Closet gathering, guests are invited to hear a gospel-centered message in a Bible study and join in worship through song. A light snack and beverages are also provided, creating space for fellowship, encouragement, and reflection on God’s love and hope. Once a week, a dedicated volunteer blesses women by washing, cutting, and styling their hair, using that time to minister to the ladies through conversation, and genuine compassion.

A Dignified Shopping Experience

Our remodeled facility features neatly organized racks of fashionable clothing, shoes, purses, socks, undergarments, accessories, and toiletries – all provided free of charge through the generosity of donors in our community. Each detail of the space is thoughtfully designed to create a welcoming, respectful atmosphere where every woman feels valued and cared for. During Clothes Closet hours, women may also receive showers and free hair care services, including washing, cutting, and styling.

Children’s clothing and shoes are available at no cost for infants through school-aged children, helping parents and caregivers provide their little ones with clean, comfortable, and seasonally appropriate items as they grow.

Private dressing rooms allow women to try on clothing and ensure a proper fit before taking items home. Our goal is to provide more than clothing; we strive to restore dignity in a loving, Christ-centered environment.

Volunteer Support

Each Tuesday and Thursday morning, the Women’s Closet is staffed by caring volunteers who assist and encourage each guest. Bible study leaders and volunteers are available to listen, pray, and build meaningful relationships. Women from all walks of life are welcomed into a supportive space where they can share burdens, hopes, and even form new friendships.

Each Monday and Wednesday, dedicated volunteers sort, size, and organize clothing, shoes, and accessories. Their efforts help maintain a clean, welcoming space that resembles a department store and ensures a positive shopping experience for every guest.

Real Women, Real Stories

When I first came to the Union Gospel Mission, it was to use the Warming Center. That’s when I heard about the Women’s Clothes Closet. Ever since I’ve come here, I’ve been on so many job interviews. I’m trying to get back on with a state job. A Clothes Closet volunteer is trying to help me navigate that. I went from being homeless, to being in the Warming Center, to now being in a house. I just got my first food box last week. Thank you to everyone that donates - all the donations that come in, especially to the Women’s Closet.

The Mission picked me up, GRACE picked me up, right where I was, and it found me... Thank you, donors, for helping give me a gentle nudge in the right direction.

How You Can Help

This vital ministry depends on the generosity and compassion of people like you. Your donations make it possible for women and children in crisis to receive not only essential items, but also dignity, care, and encouragement during a difficult season of life.

We gratefully accept donations of women’s and children’s clothing in all sizes, provided they are new or gently used and in good condition. Socks, undergarments, and toiletries are always a pressing and ongoing need, as these items are distributed quickly and cannot be reused. Every contribution—large or small—helps us serve our guests with love and respect, and makes a meaningful difference in their lives.

We accept donations every day, 8 AM – 8 PM at 400 Bannon St., Sacramento, CA 95811.
